We've had another wildly successful Mission Day in Scoil Ursula. The 5th and 6th class pupils set up some wonderful stalls with books, homemade baked good, nail varnish, temporary tattoos and popcorn up for sale. There were also some great guessing games with prizes, chocolate fountains, fresh crepes and even penalty shootouts.
None of this would be possible without the trojan work of so many parents, teachers and staff and of course all of the boys and girls of the school. Thank you all so much! We raised a great amount of money on the day which goes towards helping the Ursuline Missions in Kenya. These missions focus on education and nursing care of the local community. Of course we had mountains of fun today too! We had such a fantastic day yesterday during our Sports Day! All of the boys and girls got to take part in lots of different fun activities. Just look at the wonderful pictures and smiling faces in the photos below. Thanks to all the mummies and daddies for helping us have this great day for the children! Congratulations to the children from 6th & 2nd Classes, who received their Confirmation & First Communion recently. A big thank you to their teachers, Ms Hoey, Ms Murphy, Ms Clarke & Ms Mitchell and to our SNAs, Simone Hickey and Imelda Mc Daid, for their wonderful work in preparing the children for their special days. Thanks also to our marvellous choir, who enhanced the ceremonies so beautifully under the direction of Mr Mitchell and accompanied by Emma Purcell. We are also grateful for the input of our local priests, Fr. Declan & Canon Tom. Thanks also to our secretary, Mary Meehan for the beautiful Booklets and to our caretaker, Liam Mc Loughlin and teacher, Sinéad Caffrey for transporting the artwork and adorning the Cathedral for the occasion.
A huge thank you to our wonderful Parents' Association who provided the refreshments and made the presentations in the Gilhooly Hall after both ceremonies!! There was a fantastic spread on both days and they were most enjoyable occasions!! All roads led to Scoil Ursula on Sunday when hundreds of pupils, parents and staff members made a fond trip down memory lane to reminisce about times past and meet old friends. Displays of photographs in the halla and around the school jogged memories while names were found in roll books dating back to the foundation of the school in 1966. We are hugely indebted to everyone who made this celebration possible from pupils and staff past and present under the guidance of our Deputy Principal, Roy Mitchell, who launched our Jubilee 50 Book on the day. The School Patron, Bishop Kevin, was represented by Canon Tom Hever, who spoke of his own family's association with Scoil Ursula and its predecessors. Our Chairperson Marian Moore paid tribute to the staff of the school past and present who created the wonderful family atmosphere so enjoyed by countless pupils over the half century of its existence. Sligo County Council Cathaoirleach, Rosaleen O' Grady represented the local community while the school principal, Tony Gallagher spoke of his pride at being charged with continuing the rich legacy of Ursuline education into the future. Mr. Mitchell completed the formalities by launching the publication to mark this auspicious milestone in the life of our school. Once again the Parents' Association provided the light refreshments in conjunction with the staff of the school and everybody enjoyed a cuppa and banter while they strolled around the school and compared the current campus with the one they remembered from years ago. Between the showers, guests were able to get outside and admire the wonderful new school garden, that is the latest addition to our continuing development. We look forward with hope and enthusiasm to the next 50 years of Scoil Ursula and to the continued support of our many friends as we embark upon the next stage of our journey to provide excellence in education for the children of our community. Copies of our 50th Anniversary book can be purchased through the school at €10. They say that from tiny acorns, great oak trees grow. Well in the case of Scoil Ursula it's more like great cherry blossoms but the analogy suits our school. We began as the amalgamation of St. Anne's and St. Vincent's (formerly Nazareth) schools, which were in small buildings located on the grounds of the Ursuline Convent in Finskiln. Scoil Ursula was built on the Strandhill Road after Bishop Hanly encouraged the Ursuline order to "Build where the people will be!". What great foresight he had! This year Scoil Ursula celebrates its Golden Anniversary of 50 years. We have grown to become one of the biggest primary schools in Sligo, indeed one of the biggest in Connaught. We have always endeavoured to continue the magnificent Ursuline tradition of educating the whole child and not just focus on academics alone. We strive to live up to the caring and nurturing philosophy of the Ursulines in creating a safe environment for our pupils where happiness and learning are key. To help celebrate this momentous anniversary we are opening up the doors of the school. We want to invite all of the past pupils, staff, parents and Boards of Management and the local community to our school. Maybe you can get a gang of old classmates to come along, see the school as it is now, find your name in the old Roll Books and reminisce over happy memories. We have been blown over by the wonderful comments, stories and recollections that people have shared with us of their time in the school and we have smiled at the innocent musings of our present pupils on this special occasion. We've compiled all these memories, hopes, aspirations, recollections and some history into a book which we hope to launch on the Open Day. There are also many many photographs of events in the school over the past 50 years. It hasn't been easy whittling it all down but we hope we've captured something of the magic of what this school means to so many people. On the day there will be opportunities to find yourself in old photos, peruse the old Roll Books, see how the school has changed and share a cuppa with old classmates. We do hope you can join us and relive the past and celebrate the great future ahead of us! Please do share this invitation with anyone you know who's connected to the school. Scoil Ursula held cycling workshops at school last week and everybody had a great time despite the weather and learned how to cycle safely. A big thank you to Ms O' Hara for organising the event and to Sligo Sports & Recreational Partnership for providing the excellent tutors!! A huge thank you to all our pupils, teachers and parents who made our Mad Hair Day such a success!! Thanks to you nearly €500 was raised for Children Helping Children and the Irish Heart Foundation. A big thank you to Mrs Kernan for organising this fantastic fundraiser!! Wishing you all a very Happy Mid-Term!! An information evening will be held next Wednesday 4th May in the Sligo Education Centre. It is being organised by the parent support group Dyslexia Support Sligo and the Sligo Family Resource Centre in conjunction with The Sligo Education Centre.
