Well done to our girls for a fabulous year's football and to our coaches Ms Caffrey & Ms Munnelly who had the team in great shape for the final.
There was heartbreak in Markievicz Park on Saturday as our Girls' Football Team lost out in a pulsating final to Scoil Naomh Molaise by just one point. It was a fantastic display by both teams who served up a most entertaining end-to-end game of football which had the supporters from both schools enthralled to the final whistle. Scoil Ursula started slowly in the first half and fell behind their opponents by a few points by half time. However, the found their rhythm early in the second half and some excellent combined play saw them levelling the match with minutes to go. Unfortunately, they weren't able to find that elusive score to get their noses in front and the Grange team came back strongly at the finish and got the winning point at the death.
Well done to our girls for a fabulous year's football and to our coaches Ms Caffrey & Ms Munnelly who had the team in great shape for the final. Well done to our Girls' and Boys' teams, who both started with a 100% record over their first two fixtures in this year's competition. Both teams had good wins over Ransboro NS and Carraroe NS last week. They now need only one more win to make certain of qualification to the semi-finals. Next up is Ballymote NS on this coming Thursday in Kent Park at 12:00. We wish all concerned well and thank our coaches Ms Caffrey, Ms Munnelly, Ms Burke, Ms Caffrey and a special thank you to Ms Clarke, who leaves us this week. Congratulations to our hurlers who have qualified for the Cumann na mBunscoil Semi-Finals for the first time ever. It took a huge comeback with three scores in the last 5 minutes against the Gaelscoil to force the game into extra time and in a tense nail-biting finish Scoil Ursula squeezed out a one-point victory. Well done to our whole panel who have trained very hard this year to improve hurling in the school. The Scoil Ursula Spelling Bee took place in the Halla last week. Three spellers from each of our 5th & 6th Classes took part. The competition was keenly contested and came down to a very tense and exciting tie-breaker between two classmates, Mikolaj and Fionn.
Mikolaj won out in the end and goes on to represent the school in the Easons Spelling Bee Sligo County Final, which takes place in St. John's NS on Thursday. We wish him every success!!! Congratulations to Danielle, who represented Scoil Ursula at the recent Connacht Primary School Swimming Championships. She won bronze medals in the 50m Butterfly & Breaststroke and goes on to the National Finals in the National Aquatic Arena in February. Well done, Danielle!! Congratulations to our Hurling Team who made history by becoming the first ever hurling team from Scoil Ursula to gain a victory in a Cumann na mBunscoil game. The team travelled to Rathcormac today, where they had a deserved 9-point win against the home side in less than ideal conditions for hurling. They now need one more win after Christmas to qualify for the next stage of the competition. Hurling is a fledgling sport in the school with coaching only introduced in 2010 with 1st & 2nd classes. That early work by Coach John Mullins was built on by his successor Benny Kenny and is now paying off as these young hurlers enter the senior classes. We entered the competition for the first time last year but didn't manage a win. This first victory is an important step in building confidence in the squad and encouraging more pupils to take up this fantastic game of ours. Well done to all our players on this great achievement!!
The school was visited recently by a delegation from the Fr. Flanagan League Society in the USA. They came to honour one of last year's 6th Class pupils, Fatima Jamshaid, who helped design the Society's new crest. Fatima, now a student in the Ursuline College, took part in a competition to design a crest in keeping with the mission of Fr. Edward, Flanagan, a Roscommon born priest who went to Summerhill College. Her design and two others were combined to form the final prototype, which will be used by the society in all its literature and promotional work into the future. Fatima was presented with memorabilia associated with Fr. Flanagan and Boystown by the President of the society, Steve Wolf, a former resident of Boystown, Nebraska. A big thank you to 6th Class teacher, Mrs Siobhán Calleary, who organised the competition in the school! We had or most successful Athletics Fest ever on Friday, when 36 athletes from Scoil Ursula participated in this very enjoyable annual event in Sligo IT. Seven out of our nine teams qualified for finals on the day. Out of those finalists we had a first, a second, a third, two fourths and two fifth placings and all out of competitions of thirty-two participants or more. Our Junior Boys took the honours in the 100m Relay, with the Junior Girls achieving 2nd place in their 100m sprint while our Senior Boys came in third in their 100m race. Well done to all our athletes on a brilliant display!! Six children competed in the Comhrá Gailge competitions in Riverstown on Saturday June 1st. The Under 9 competitoes were Saoirse Nic Lochlainn, Amy Ni Shearraigh and Ella Ni Dhonnabháin. The Under 11 competitors were Dáire Ó Coirc, Róisín Nic Lochlainn and Ryan Ó Laoire.
All Under 9 competitors were successful and are through to the Connacht Fleadh in Carrick-on-Shannon on July 6th. Congratulations to everyone that took part and a special Well Done and best of luck to those going on to the Connacht Fleadh! |
