A Chairde, we are delighted to be celebrating the 16th World Book Day in Ireland on Thursday 6th March 2014. Over the last 16 years World Book Day has become firmly established as Ireland’s biggest annual event promoting the enjoyment of books and reading. The main aim is to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading by providing them with an opportunity to have a book of their own. This may sound like a very simple idea, but unfortunately, many children do not have access to books in their homes.
Don’t forget that you can now also follow us on Facebook and Twitter. We will have lots of great competitions and giveaways as well as news, info and reading resources.
As always, happy reading.
Any child interested in taking part in the St. Mary's Community Games please contact

A number of Scoil Ursula pupils travelled to the Model Niland Gallery on Valetine's Day to help launch a fundraiser in association with the Friends of Sligo Regional Hospital. It is hoped to involve schools from around Sligo in a June fundraiser to help improve cardiac services in the hospital. Pupils will collect €2 coins which will hopefully cover the pedestrian bridge at Rockwood Parade.
Following on from the amazing success of our school in achieving our 5th Green Flag recently we have decided to promote fitness in Scoil Ursula by participating in the Active School Flag programme. This will involve encouraging all of our school community to be more active throughout the day and to celebrate all of our many "active" achievements in sport and play.
We are going to run a competition to select a logo and slogan for the programme in our school. There will also be some responsible senior pupils organising games for the younger pupils in our school during break times.
The programme was launched this morning at our Senior Assembly where Mr. Gallagher and Ms. E. Caffrey spoke about the importance of being active and all the fun you can have doing it.
There are lots of ideas and resources that parents can check out by following this link. We hope you will encourage all of your friends and family to become more active and join in the great fun we will have in Scoil Ursula by making our school the most active school in Sligo...or maybe even in the country!
Congratulations to all of the boys and girls who won awards this month.
Keep up the great work and try to be good role models for our school!
Internet Safety Day is tomorrow, Tuesday, the 11th of February. It is a good time to discuss with children how to stay safe on the Internet as well as appropriate use of the World Wide Web. Click on the image to the left for more information and remember, there is an Internet Safety evening in Sligo Education Centre on Thursday see below.
Congratulations to our January Students of the Month and Hand-Writers of the Month and to Mark who brings home the Trophy for the month. Our 3 areas of focus this month are:
The Scoil Ursula Spelling Bee took place in the Halla last week. Three spellers from each of our 5th & 6th Classes took part. The competition was keenly contested and came down to a very tense and exciting tie-breaker between two classmates, Mikolaj and Fionn.
Mikolaj won out in the end and goes on to represent the school in the Easons Spelling Bee Sligo County Final, which takes place in St. John's NS on Thursday. We wish him every success!!!
