Last week was National Walk to School Week and as a Green School, we held two events to mark the occasion. Our traditional WOW Day which we are encouraging pupils to extend to a Walk Every Day was a big success as was our Feet First Friday where pupils walked in in quirky, funky footwear. We collect our 5th Green Flag in Castlebar next Tuesday and Committee Members, Tara Keaveney & KevinKelly from Ms Mitchell's 3rd Class will accompany Greenschools Co-ordinator, Mrs Smyth and Deputy Principal, Mrs Corcoran to the Awards Ceremony. Add Comment Well done to our April Students of the Month and Hand-Writers of the Month and to Tara, who brings home the Trophy for the month. A Festival of Faith will take place in the Sligo Cluster Parishes over the coming week. Commencing on Sunday, May 19th at 7.30 pm. with The Dunmore Parish Choir in St. Patrick's Church, Strandhill and continuing on Monday, May 20th with Festival Opening Mass in the Cathedral at 7.45 pm., assembling in the Peace Park at 7.30pm. Full details in the brochure below: Congratulations to our prizewinners in this year's Golden Pen Awards. In the Poetry section Ellen Gilmartin took first prize with her poem 'Dark Night'. Joy Feehily came second with 'Poor Little Snowdrop' while Fatima Jamshaid's 'The Dark' claimed third spot. Special merit awards went to Nicole Gunning, Rachel Davitt and Donal Keaveney. Well done to all our budding poets. In the Short Story section, Fatima Jamshaid came second, followed by Andrea Flynn in 3rd place. Ronan Connolly and Dara Courell received Special Merit awards. Well done to everybody who took part. We will publish the prize-winning entries on the website in the near future. Our Annual Lilac Day in aid of the Blathnaid Foley Trust for Cancer Research was a great success!! The school was sea of lilac and purple last Friday and we raised €500 for this wonderful cause. Well done everybody!!! Congratulations to the girls and boys of 2nd Class who recently received their 1st Holy Communion in the Cathedral. Our heartfelt thanks to their teachers, Ms Burke & Ms Crowley for preparing them so well for their special day. Our thanks also to our wonderful choir and their director, Mrs Corcoran for enhancing the ceremony so beautifully and to recent past pupil Alice Purcell, who accompanied them on the organ. In conjunction with the community games which are being held this Sunday the 5th of May 2013 at St Mary’s GAA, Ballydoogan, Sligo, our local Ladies GAA club, St. Mary’s are using the opportunity to fundraise and we are holding our annual Cake Sale. We are appealing for donations of cakes, buns, finger food etc to sell on the day as per the poster below. Your support would be greatly appreciated! Our two 6th classes took part in a Robotics Workshop in St. Angela's College last week. It was part of our collaborative links drive with our sister Ursuline schools in the locality. Dr. Niamh Plunkett, Director of the Centre for Lifelong Learning, oversaw the project and Brendan White facilitated the workshops. The pupils had a fantastic time building and programming Lego robots. The CLL in St. Angela's also run Summer Camps in July. Click here for more information. Scoil Ursula has received news that it has been awarded its 5th Green Flag for its outstanding work in the area of Biodiversity. Congratulations to Mrs Smyth, Mrs Corcoran and their committee along with all the other staff members and pupils who contributed to this fantastic achievement for the school. Comhgairdeas gach duine!!! Scoil Ursula Parents' Association organised an Easter Egg Hunt & Bake Sale on Sunday last. There was a wonderful turn-out and everybody had a great time.
