The School's National Children's Choir, who performed in the National Concert Hall in 2011 were reunited to sing at the wedding of their director's daughter. Deputy Principal, Mrs Corcoran conducted the choir once more along with a few extra Scoil Ursula choristers as her daughter, Sarah, married her fiancé, Seamus, in the Cathedral on Saturday. We wish them both health & happiness into the future.
Starting next week we'll be enlisting the help of the Student Council to begin our hunt for the Scoil Ursula Pupil Press Corps. This group of students will be tasked with reporting the news from their classrooms and classmates on the School News section of this website. This is an exciting development of our school website. We hope our parents, families and all the friends of Scoil Ursula get involved in commenting on and sharing the school news posts! Stay tuned to find out more! Hard luck to our Girls' Mini-7s Team, who narrowly failed to qualify for this year's finals. In St. Patrick's GAA Grounds, Dromard, today the girls played superbly well to overcome the challenge of Corballa NS in their first match. Next up was the decider against a bigger physically stronger High Park NS team, who got off to a flying start and built up a ten-point lead by half-time. However, our girls never gave up and almost brought off a miraculous comeback, outscoring their opponents by nine points in the second half. But try as they might, Scoil Ursula just couldn't get that vital last goal and went down by the narrowest of margins on a scoreline of 3-2 to 3-1. Well done to all our players and their coach, Ms Hoey, on a terrific effort this year. Over many years in Scoil Ursula we have had the good fortune to have Marian Moore as the Chairperson on our Board of Management. Unfortunately Marian's son Marcus has been suffering for many years with leukemia. A Fund has been set up in order to pay for specialised treatment which is a Test Drug that is being tested by 48 hospitals world wide. The nearest one to Sligo is the Royal Free London under the care of Dr. Adelle Fielding, Consultant Haemotologist. It is an antibody and so far there is over 70% remission of over 17 months. Marcus does meet the criteria in that there must be over 10% blasts in the bone marrow and is a relapse. A bank account has been set up at Ulster Bank. The sort code is: 98/62/60 ad the account number is:00131966. The account is called the Marcus Moore Treatment Fund if anybody wishes to make a donation. A Golf Classic is being organised for Saturday,19th August by the Residents Association and booking can be made at Sligo Golf Club and Strandhill Golf Club via Patsy Gallagher and Martin Campion and John McHugh. If anyone is interested please get in contact with the clubs involved. St John's GAA Club Carraroe have also organised an Adult Disco in Sligo Park Hotel on Saturday 14th July, 2012. Tickets are being printed this week and although we are unsure of the prices as yet we're sure it'll be widely supported for such a worthy cause. If you can at all please do spread the word with your own family and friends. We hope that you might be able to help out Marcus and his family in their fundraising efforts. The prayers and good wishes of the whole school community are with them all especially now. Scoil Ursula has truly joined the digital age and we are now live on Facebook and Twitter. We hope this will open up even more lines of communication with the parents, friends and past pupils of our school including the local community. You can follow us on Twitter @ScoilUrsulaNS and on Facebook by liking (and sharing) our page. We'll be posting news and events to these sites as well as to our school website so make sure to follow, get in touch and by all means...spread the word! The teachers of Scoil Ursula have recently undergone training in CPR and use of AED life saving equipment. In order for the school to get a free defibrillator for the campus we need to collect 250 old phones. If you have any old phones lying around the house then please do donate them to the school. There is a collection box just inside the main door so you can't miss it. A wonderful Multi-Cultural event took place in the school over two days this week. Pupils with family origins in many countries including Germany, India, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Pakistan, Phillipines, Poland, Portugal & Spain displayed projects in the halla. All the pupils got a chance to sample traditional dishes as well as learning about the culture, language, dress and heritage of these lands. A big thank you to Mrs Mc Moreland for co-ordinating this most enjoyable and informative event. See slide show below: It's that time of year again where we all go book crazy here in Scoil Ursula! The Book Fair is taking place this Thursday and Friday the 17th and 18th of May in the Halla in the school. There'll be hundreds of great books to choose from so shake out some coins out of those piggy banks! We all love a good book and an interest in reading sets our children up for life. Parents, family and friends are welcome to come to the Book Fair too! Watch out for the reminder text on your phones this week for more details. We're all a bunch of book worms here! :) There was drumming galore today in Scoil Ursula when Peter Crann came by to facilitate a samba drumming workshop.
Children had experience of many different types of drums and were able to hear the way the drumbeat brings life to music and story. Peter is recently back in Ireland after spending time in Senegal teaching children there about Irish music and has returned to teach Irish children the beat of African music. |
