A big thank you to Mrs Kernan for organising this fantastic fundraiser!! Wishing you all a very Happy Mid-Term!! An information evening will be held next Wednesday 4th May in the Sligo Education Centre. It is being organised by the parent support group Dyslexia Support Sligo and the Sligo Family Resource Centre in conjunction with The Sligo Education Centre.
Dyslexia Support Sligo is a relatively new support group for parents of children with dyslexia and meet 4-5 times a year in the Sligo Family Resource Centre. To date it has set up a Facebook page, helped to organise classes for children with dyslexia 3rd - 6th class in the Sligo Family Resource Centre and the information evening. It received some funding from Sligo Leader Partnership. Sligo FRC is a voluntary organisation funded by Tusla Child and Family Agency and HSE to support families in Sligo and Leitrim. It has been in existence since 1995.For more information see: sligofamilyresourcecentre.org/ The Scoil Ursula hurling amigos team qualified for the county finals recently. The competition, which tests the hurling skills of teams of four, was held in Summerhill College and three teams finished in first place on 26 points; Scoil Ursula, Rosses Point and Gaelscoil Cnoc na Ré. Well done to Eoghan, Fintan, Eli & Connor and best of luck in the final next week.
Communication is very important to Scoil Ursula. To this end we are going to trial a new smartphone app to replace whole school and whole class texting. Text messages cost the school a lot of money each year and this new app will be much cheaper for us, it’s free for you to use and you don’t need to give any information to anyone, like phone numbers, to receive the messages. It’s also very easy to use and find the groups you want to receive messages from.
It’s just a few steps
If there are any issues with the app please email [email protected] and Mr. Mitchell will try to help you resolve the issue as fast as possible. Congratulations to Abbie Mc Gowan from 1st Class who won the Children Helping Children Easter Colouring Competition!! It is the first time a pupil from Scoil Ursula has won. Well done Abbie and a big thank you to Mrs Kernan for organising the entries!!
Our Annual GAA Jersey Day takes place this Friday, April 15th to contribute to our school coaching scheme. Please wear in a GAA jersey if you have one or any sports jersey or even your Scoil Ursula blue tracksuit on the day. The suggested contribution is €3 per pupil or €5 per family, which is great value for 10 weeks coaching. Scoil Ursula was honoured with a national award in the Annual Cornmarket Cumann na mBunscol Awards. The school was honoured at a ceremony in the Oriel Hotel in Cork on Friday March 11th in the Promotion of Gaelic Games and Culture Category. Well done to 5th & 6th classes for their contributions and to Ms Munnelly who co-ordinated the project. This prestigious accolade is in recognition of the school's efforts over recent years in promoting Gaelic Games and culture and is the result of many people's efforts in making Scoil Ursula one of the top GAA schools in the county. Well done everybody!!!
Sonia, O Sullivan, one of Irelands greatest ever athletes was at the IT Sligo Running track on Thursday the 3rd March to attend a very special primary schools 2K team challenge. July 1994 was the date, Edinburgh the venue when Sonia O Sullivan ran a time of 2.25.36 for the 2K, setting a new world record for the distance and knocking almost 3 seconds of the previous world best. The brilliance of this performance is exemplified in the fact that now, over twenty years later this record still stands, and the children of primary schools around County Sligo including Scoil Ursula gathered at the IT Sligo Athletics track to try and challenge this historic record. The event was organised by Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership (SSRP) in conjunction with the Connacht Schools Athletics Association and supported by Sligo AC. In teams of 10 (mixed boys and girls) and running 200m each, twenty seven primary schools participated in the 2K challenge. Every pupil involved ran their heart out under the watchful eye of Ireland's running legend who had lots of encouragement for all the children involved and participated in some warming up with the children before each event. Although none of the schools managed to break Sonia’s 2K world record, all of the schools performed extremely well and Sonia herself was impressed by the overall standard of running and times, particularly given the windy conditions. The runners from Scoil Ursula ran very well coming second in their section in a time of 2.45.72. Well done to all!!! Before the Easter break, Board of Management member and stalwart parent, Sharon Carleton, brought two St. Mary's GAA stars and Scoil Ursula past pupils to the school to promote the underage coaching scheme among our current students. St. Mary's are the current Sligo Senior Football Champions, having bridged a 14 year gap with a win over Curry in the final last Autumn. Mark Breheny, the current Sligo Senior Captain and St. Mary's Schools Officer, encouraged the children to get involved and spoke of the many benefits he has enjoyed over the years from being involved with his local club. He told the children that it wasn't just about the success the club has had over the years but also the friendships he has made and the health and fitness he has benefitted from that has made his life better as a result of taking part in sport. He was accompanied by Kyle Cawley, who captained the first ever Scoil Ursula boys team to win a Cumann na mBunscol title and who has gone on from strength to strength since to deliver a Man-of-the-Match performance in the county final as well as helping Summerhill College to a long awaited Connacht Colleges title in the recent historic All-Sligo final against St. Attracta's College, Tubbercurry. Mark and Kyle brought along the Owen B Hunt Cup, which is the trophy St. Mary's won last year (See below). Scoil Ursula and St. Mary's have formed close links over the years and we look forward to continuing to work together over the coming years to our mutual benefit. Both also have significant anniversaries this year with Scoil Ursula celebrating 50 years on the Strandhill Road and St. Mary's celebrating their 40th birthday. We are looking at planning a joint celebration with a special guest of honour at some point before the end of the year. |
