We began as the amalgamation of St. Anne's and St. Vincent's (formerly Nazareth) schools, which were in small buildings located on the grounds of the Ursuline Convent in Finskiln. Scoil Ursula was built on the Strandhill Road after Bishop Hanly encouraged the Ursuline order to "Build where the people will be!". What great foresight he had!
This year Scoil Ursula celebrates its Golden Anniversary of 50 years. We have grown to become one of the biggest primary schools in Sligo, indeed one of the biggest in Connaught. We have always endeavoured to continue the magnificent Ursuline tradition of educating the whole child and not just focus on academics alone. We strive to live up to the caring and nurturing philosophy of the Ursulines in creating a safe environment for our pupils where happiness and learning are key.
To help celebrate this momentous anniversary we are opening up the doors of the school. We want to invite all of the past pupils, staff, parents and Boards of Management and the local community to our school. Maybe you can get a gang of old classmates to come along, see the school as it is now, find your name in the old Roll Books and reminisce over happy memories. We have been blown over by the wonderful comments, stories and recollections that people have shared with us of their time in the school and we have smiled at the innocent musings of our present pupils on this special occasion.
We've compiled all these memories, hopes, aspirations, recollections and some history into a book which we hope to launch on the Open Day. There are also many many photographs of events in the school over the past 50 years. It hasn't been easy whittling it all down but we hope we've captured something of the magic of what this school means to so many people.
On the day there will be opportunities to find yourself in old photos, peruse the old Roll Books, see how the school has changed and share a cuppa with old classmates. We do hope you can join us and relive the past and celebrate the great future ahead of us!
Please do share this invitation with anyone you know who's connected to the school.
