Some pupils from 6th Class took part in a competition to design a crest for the Fr. Flanagan League. Fr. Flanagan was the Irish born Priest, educated in Summerhill College, who went on to found Boystown in the USA, where he looked after underprivileged boys. You can find out all about him at http://www.fatherflanagan.org/index.php Below are some of our entries: Our Confirmation Class travelled to the International Eucharistic Congress last week. It was an enjoyable and uplifting event. We took part in a very special mass with hundreds of children from around Ireland and the world. We saw an exhibition about Army Chaplaincy and one about the Apostles journey with Jesus. We also visiting the beautiful Rosary Garden and prayed for our special intentions. Ms Caffrey also met one of her heroes, Dublin footballer, Ger Brennan (see picture), who took part in our Mass and shared his faith experience with us. It was a great day and we are thankful to our teachers, Ms Greavy & Ms Caffrey, for bringing us and to Goretti from Sligo Youth Ministry for being with us too.
Today is Saint Angela's Day. She was the founder of the Ursuline Order, her inspired philosophy of education is the reason our school and hundreds more like it are still in existence today! Catholic Schools Week takes place this week, January 29th – February 4th and we will be marking the occasion in the school in a
number of ways including a special Assembly on Monday, January 30th. The Catholic School … • Has at its heart the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ • Builds an environment of care and concern for others that is rooted in Catholic social teaching • Creates a safe and happy learning environment where every child is encouraged and enabled to develop to their full and unique potential as human beings, made in the image and likeness of God • Seeks educational excellence while remaining faithful to their distinctive vision and approach • Is an inclusive and respectful community, welcoming children of all denominations and of none • Acknowledges the role of parents as the first teachers in the ways of faith and provides opportunities for their participation in the life of the school • Works in partnership with parents and the parish community to keep the light of faith burning brightly • Provides religious education programmes that confirm and deepen the child’s understanding of the Catholic faith so that every child will be as articulate in their faith as in all other areas of the curriculum • Nurtures the child’s appreciation and understanding of the sacramental life of the Church • Displays the symbols of our rich Catholic faith tradition • Spends time as a school community in reflection, prayer and ritual, celebrating the Eucharist and other sacraments to develop the spiritual life of each person in the school community.
