Congratulations to Danielle, who represented Scoil Ursula at the recent Connacht Primary School Swimming Championships. She won bronze medals in the 50m Butterfly & Breaststroke and goes on to the National Finals in the National Aquatic Arena in February. Well done, Danielle!!
Congratulations to our Hurling Team who made history by becoming the first ever hurling team from Scoil Ursula to gain a victory in a Cumann na mBunscoil game. The team travelled to Rathcormac today, where they had a deserved 9-point win against the home side in less than ideal conditions for hurling. They now need one more win after Christmas to qualify for the next stage of the competition. Hurling is a fledgling sport in the school with coaching only introduced in 2010 with 1st & 2nd classes. That early work by Coach John Mullins was built on by his successor Benny Kenny and is now paying off as these young hurlers enter the senior classes. We entered the competition for the first time last year but didn't manage a win. This first victory is an important step in building confidence in the squad and encouraging more pupils to take up this fantastic game of ours. Well done to all our players on this great achievement!!
20 athletes from Scoil Ursula travelled to Sligo IT to take part in the Fit2Walk 1K Race-Walking Challenge where they met World 50Km Champion Rob Heffernan from Cork. Well done to everyone involved!!! Our 6th Classes recently took part in a Touch Rugby Blitz Day in Sligo Rugby Club. Schools from all over the county participated and our three teams, the Scorpions, the Slammers and the Sonics acquitted themselves very well with the Scorpions completing a "Grand Slam" by winning all of their matches. A big thank you to the 6th Class teachers, Mrs Calleary and Ms Caffrey for organising the teamsupervising the event Well done to our Girls’ Mini-7s team who qualified for the finals of the competition in St. Mary's on Thursday last. Unfortunately, we came up against a very big and strong Castlerock team in our semi-final and despite the best efforts of our girls, they won through to the final where they defeated Calry. A big thank you to Ms Munnelly & Ms Caffrey for taking charge of the team during the season! We can now look forward to the Cumann na mBunscoil championship with great hope. We had or most successful Athletics Fest ever on Friday, when 36 athletes from Scoil Ursula participated in this very enjoyable annual event in Sligo IT. Seven out of our nine teams qualified for finals on the day. Out of those finalists we had a first, a second, a third, two fourths and two fifth placings and all out of competitions of thirty-two participants or more. Our Junior Boys took the honours in the 100m Relay, with the Junior Girls achieving 2nd place in their 100m sprint while our Senior Boys came in third in their 100m race. Well done to all our athletes on a brilliant display!! If you are interested in Gymnastics, go along to Dy Namo's Open Gym Fest on Saturday week. Details to the left. "Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt." This is the famous Athlete Oath of Special Olympics. It encapsulates everything about Special Olympics, athletic excellence, determination to reach for your potential and bravery in the face of enormous odds. This year is the 10th Anniversary of the Special Olympics World Games and to mark it Scoil Ursula held a fundraiser for Special Olympics Ireland where we sold mini-muffins kindly donated by Cuisine de France. We raised €305 in one day for this very important charity. By donating this money the children and families of Scoil Ursula are helping to raise vital funds that will help Special Olympics Ireland to provide sports training and competition to people with intellectual disabilities across Ireland. Thank You! Below is an emotional clip of just how amazing those World Games in Ireland in 2003 turned out! If you would like to get involved in this very worthy cause by donating your time or money then please click here to find out more. Congratulations to the Girls' and Boys' Football teams who were both victorious over Ballisodare today. The win qualifies the girls for the semi-final, while the boys need one more win to make it to the same stage after slipping up in their first match against Carraroe. The last group match away against Ballymote takes place on Wednesday at 11:30am. A big thank you to our coaches, Ms Caffrey & Ms Munnelly for all their hard work. We are also grateful to Castlelough Corporation for sponsoring a set of jerseys for our boys' team. The picture shows Declan Hughes of Castlelough presenting to the Boys Team Captain, Seán Casey. |
