The History of Scoil Ursula
This year, Scoil Ursula proudly celebrates 60 years of education, community, and tradition in Sligo. Established in 1966, the school was formed through the amalgamation of St. Anne’s and St. Vincent’s (formerly Nazareth) schools, which were originally located on the grounds of the Ursuline Convent in Finskiln.
Scoil Ursula was built on its current site on the Strandhill Road following the vision and encouragement of Bishop Hanly, who urged the Ursuline Sisters to “Build where the people will be.” His foresight helped shape what has become one of the largest primary schools in Sligo.
For six decades, Scoil Ursula has remained deeply rooted in the Ursuline tradition of educating the whole child. Alongside academic excellence, the school continues to promote a caring, nurturing, and inclusive environment where the happiness and wellbeing of every pupil are at the heart of school life.
Throughout its history, Scoil Ursula has been a central part of the local community, with generations of pupils, families, and staff contributing to the vibrant spirit of the school. Today, the school continues to grow and evolve while honouring the values, traditions, and sense of community that have defined Scoil Ursula for the past 60 years.
