3rd and 4th classes had a very enjoyable day in St. Mary's GAA grounds playing quick games of Gaelic Football and Hurling. It was very exciting and great to see all the children getting a go and a taste of these brilliant Irish sports! Congratulations to our girls GAAmigos team who were runners-up in the county final held recently in Summerhill College. The girls lost out by the narrowest margin to Mullaghroe NS. They scored 42 out of a possible 45 in their skills tests with the winners achieving 43. Well done to the girls for all the hard work they put in over the past few weeks. Maybe next year, we will go all the way!! Congratulations to our Girls GAAmigos team who qualified for the county finals of this year's skills competition!! Hard luck to the boys team who narrowly failed to get through after a brave effort. Congratulations to our Hurling Team who made history by becoming the first ever hurling team from Scoil Ursula to gain a victory in a Cumann na mBunscoil game. The team travelled to Rathcormac today, where they had a deserved 9-point win against the home side in less than ideal conditions for hurling. They now need one more win after Christmas to qualify for the next stage of the competition. Hurling is a fledgling sport in the school with coaching only introduced in 2010 with 1st & 2nd classes. That early work by Coach John Mullins was built on by his successor Benny Kenny and is now paying off as these young hurlers enter the senior classes. We entered the competition for the first time last year but didn't manage a win. This first victory is an important step in building confidence in the squad and encouraging more pupils to take up this fantastic game of ours. Well done to all our players on this great achievement!!
Well done to our Girls’ Mini-7s team who qualified for the finals of the competition in St. Mary's on Thursday last. Unfortunately, we came up against a very big and strong Castlerock team in our semi-final and despite the best efforts of our girls, they won through to the final where they defeated Calry. A big thank you to Ms Munnelly & Ms Caffrey for taking charge of the team during the season! We can now look forward to the Cumann na mBunscoil championship with great hope. St. Mary's GAA Club Nursery Programme for 4 to 6 year olds starts Monday 11th November in St. John's School Temple Street & runs for 6 weeks. The aim is to introduce young children to Gaelic football in a safe and enjoyable environment & new players are always welcome! It will take place from 6pm to 7pm costing only €2 per child per night. No prior GAA experience is required & all are welcome to attend! Congratulations to the Girls' and Boys' Football teams who were both victorious over Ballisodare today. The win qualifies the girls for the semi-final, while the boys need one more win to make it to the same stage after slipping up in their first match against Carraroe. The last group match away against Ballymote takes place on Wednesday at 11:30am. A big thank you to our coaches, Ms Caffrey & Ms Munnelly for all their hard work. We are also grateful to Castlelough Corporation for sponsoring a set of jerseys for our boys' team. The picture shows Declan Hughes of Castlelough presenting to the Boys Team Captain, Seán Casey. In conjunction with the community games which are being held this Sunday the 5th of May 2013 at St Mary’s GAA, Ballydoogan, Sligo, our local Ladies GAA club, St. Mary’s are using the opportunity to fundraise and we are holding our annual Cake Sale. We are appealing for donations of cakes, buns, finger food etc to sell on the day as per the poster below. Your support would be greatly appreciated! Scoil Ursula was honoured with a visit from the President of the GAA, Liam O’ Neill. He was accompanied by County Board Chairman, Cyril Feehily, our County GAA Games Manager, Liam Óg Gormley, our Football Coach, Charles Harrison and our hurling coach, Benny Kenny. Also in attendance were Frank Carter, Chairman of our local football club, St. Mary’s, and Bill O’Kelly Lynch from our local hurling club, Naomh Eoin as well as members of our Board of Management. The President was in Sligo to lend his support to the wonderful work that is being undertaken in the promotion of Gaelic Games in schools at primary, post-primary and at Third level in this county. As a Primary School Principal, he is particularly committed to providing the best possible framework for our primary school children to learn and enjoy Gaelic Games. He viewed coaching sessions in both Football & Hurling before addressing a packed assembly in the Halla. Scoil Ursula has close links with our local club, St. Mary’s, and Club Chairman Frank Carter spoke on its behalf. We have also recently begun to develop hurling as a sport in the school with our team playing its first ever match on Wednesday. Our local hurling club, Naomh Eoin, was represented by Club Secretary, Bill O’ Kelly Lynch, who spoke on its behalf. In his address, Mr O' Neill, emphasised the enjoyment of participation in all sports and encouraged the children to be respectful on the field of play. Our Deputy Principal, Mrs Corcoran made a presentation to mark his visit to Sligo and Scoil Ursula. She presented the President with a piece of Sligo Pottery depicting the Fiddler of Dooney famed in the Yeats poem, which we hope will remind him of his visit here in the years to come. The planned visit of GAA President, Liam O' Neill to the school tomorrow has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. He will rearrange the visit at the earliest possible free date in his schedule. Apologies for the inconvenience!! |
