The R.M.S. Titanic
The R.M.S Titanic was built in Belfast in 1910. It sank on its first voyage on April the 14th 1914 when it hit an iceberg.
The Mighty Titanic
The Titanic was built for the White Star Line. They wanted it to be the best and most luxurious ship in the world. I was really famous and cost £75 million to build.
The Titanic was travelling at top speed to beat all competition. As a result of the speed, the Titanic could not turn quick enough when it saw an iceberg in the distance.
The “unsinkable” ship
The Titanic was called the “unsinkable ship” The builders said “Even God himself could not sink this ship”. They did not include enough lifeboats in their plans because they thought the Titanic would never sink. Many people died because they didn’t believe the ship was sinking, and there were not enough lifeboats to save everybody. The captain (E.J. Smyth) went down with the ship. Women and children were allowed on the lifeboats first.
Iceberg right ahead
On 14th April 1912 the Titanic skidded against an Iceberg. It put holes in the side of the ship. 5 compartments of the Titanic flooded. They could see the iceberg from the lookout but as the ship was travelling too fast they could not turn in time.
Ice bergs are huge blocks of ice that float around in the ocean. They can come in many different colours. They are a lot bigger under the water. Bits of the iceberg broke off onto the deck of the Titanic. People played football with them!
