The Great Pyramid of Giza is truly one of the most magnificent ancient landmarks still is . Built as a giant tomb for the pharaoh Khufu, the Great Pyramid took tens of thousands of workers over 20 years to complete. Each of the 2.4 million stone blocks that the pyramid weighs between one and two tons! Although the pyramid once rose 481 feet from the floor of the Sahara Desert, wind has in a loss of about 30 feet from the of pyramid. Today, the Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the world's most visited monuments. I got 70% on this cloze test

Amelia Earhart was one of America's most celebrated female pilots. Born in Kansas in 1897, Amelia became fascinated with flying after attending an air show in California in 1920. She soon bought her own airplane and instantly began breaking flight records. In 1926, Amelia became the first woman to participate in a non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean (although she was only a passenger). In 1932, Amelia became the first woman to pilot an airplane across the Atlantic Ocean. Amelia had her sights set on bigger goals, however. In 1935, she and Fred Noonan formulated plans to fly across the world. On June 1, 1937, the historic voyage began. After initial success, contact with the plane was lost after the pair left New Guinea on July 2. No one ever heard from Amelia Earhart or Fred Noonan again. The mystery of the disappearance of Amelia Earhart lives on today. Her inspiration will live on forever.

I got 75% on Amelia Earhart.

Butterflies go through four main stages of life. The first stage is the egg stage followedby the larval stage. As a larvae, or caterpillar, the future butterfly eats as much as possible. As it grows, it sheds it outer skin, or exoskeleton. This may happen four or five times. After a few weeks, the caterpillar enters the next stage of its life, the chrysalis stage. In the chrysalis, the caterpillar will liquefy into a soup of living cells. Then, it will reorganize into a butterfly and the metamorphosis is complete. In later parts of the chrysalis stage, you can see the forming butterfly through the chrysalis.

The Barbary Pirates were a band of privateers who served as part of the naval forces of the Ottoman Empire, a huge, multi-ethnic empire that spanned throughout southern Europe, northern Africa, the Mediterranean region, and the Middle East. The Barbary Pirates operated in teams from ports in North Africa such as Algeirs, Tunis and Tripoli. Their reign of terror in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean lasted about 250 years from the late 1500's to the early 1800's. By the 1700's, the Barbary Pirates had become so fearsome that many nations, including the United States for some time, agreed to pay them an annual ransom to ensure their trading vessels sailed safely in the Mediterranean.
